Dominica can include a swim. It is a poor choice if the only plan is a resort beach with a chair waiting.

What the coast is like

The shoreline is volcanic: rock, pebbles, river mouths, and some coves where people swim. It is not a chain of hotel beaches with a published standard of loungers, shade and beach bars. This guide does not claim chairs, facilities, fees or guaranteed access anywhere. If a page elsewhere shows a long white-sand lagoon with windsurfers, it is probably another island.

• Time in the water is realistic. Time on a rented lounger is not something you should expect from this article.
• West-coast bays are the ones most often mentioned because they sit closer to Roseau than the Atlantic side. Closer is not a transfer we can describe.
• Scotts Head, at the southern end, is a scenic peninsula people swim and snorkel from. It is a headland, not a resort strip, and sea conditions change it.
• Northeast and east-coast beaches are a different road story from a short west-coast hop. Treat them as a possible focus of a day, not a quick swim after the falls. Journey times vary by traffic, conditions and route.
• Rain, river outflow and swell change whether a bay is pleasant. A brown line of water after rain is weather, not a closed promise.
